Starry, we have learnt the addition of two digit number using vertical arrangement.

Now we shall learn subtraction of two digit number in the same way.

Tell me Starry, do you remember how to arrange the numbers in their proper columns?

Ok, then consider the example, 76 minus 42.

First arrange the numbers in the appropriate columns.

Yes, we shall write 7 in the tens column, and 6 in the units column.

Then we shall write the digit 4 in the tens column below 7, and 2 below 6 in the units column.

Now let’s do subtraction.
First, we shall subtract the digit in the units place,

6 minus 2 is 4, write 4 in the unit's place of the answer.

What should we do next Starry?

 Yes, let’s subtract 7 tens minus 4 tens we get 3 tens.
So 76 minus 42 equals 34.

Next solve the next example.
It is 49 minus 18.

We shall first arrange the numbers in proper columns as shown.

What is the first step Starry?
Yes, let’s subtract units, so 9 minus 8 equals 1.

Next, we subtract the digit in the tens place, so 4 minus 1 give 3.

Hence, 49 minus 18 is equal to 31.

Do you want some more example Starry?
Ok, then subtract 40 from 85.

Here again, we shall first arrange the numbers vertically.

Now, we subtract the digit in the units place.

Hey Starry, we have to subtract 0 from 5.

Remember,We have learnt that if we have to subtract 0 from any number then the answer is the number itself.

So what will be 5 minus 0 Starry? Yes, 5.

Now 8 tens minus 4 tens equals 4 tens.

 That 85 minus 40 equals to 45.

The next example is 88 minus 63.
See Starry, the numbers have already been arranged vertically.

Now, do subtraction quickly.

Yes, 8 units minus 3 units is equal to 5 units, 
8 tens minus 6 tens is equal to 2 tens.

So 88 minus 63 is equal to 25.
Now let’s solve the last example , Starry.

Umm, subtract 57 from 36.
Which number should we arrange first Starry?

Yes, 57. Write 5 in the tens column, and 7 in the units column.

Now let’s arrange the number 36. 
What will be 7 units minus 6 units ,Starry?

Yes, 1 units.
Now, we shall subtract 3 tens from 5, we get the answer 2 tens.

So on subtracting 36 from 57 ,we get the answer 21.
