60 is the number that comes after 59, s-i-x-t-y.
Let me explain it to you with these strings of beads.
Each of this string has 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 beads.
Now there are 1 ten+1 ten+1 ten+1 ten+1 ten+1 ten that’s 60 beads Starry, 6 tens, 60.

Suppose we add 1 single bead to these beads Starry that would be 6 tens and 1, 61, s-i-x-t-y o-ne, 61.
On adding 2 beads we get 6 tens 2 units, 62, s-i-x-t-y t-w-o, 62.
Now Starry, let’s add 1-2-3 beads, that gives us 6 tens 3 units, 63, s-i-x-t-y t-h-r-e-e, 63.

That should we do next Starry, let’s add 4 beads. Now we get 6 tens 4, 64, s-i-x-t-h f-o-u-r, 64.

Now look at these garlands of flowers Starry!
They are 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 flowers in each garland.

And there are 1 tens +1 tens +1 tens +1 tens +1 tens +1 tens +1 tens +1 tens that’s 7 tens, 70 flowers.
Now suppose I add a singular flower to these 7 garland, I get 7 tens 1 which is 71, s-e-v-e-n-t-y o-n-e, 71.
On adding 2 flowers we get 7 tens 2 that 72, s-e-v-e-n-t-y t-w-o,72.

When 1-2-3 flowers are added to the 7 garlands it’s formed 7 tens 3 which is 73, s-e-v-e-n-t-y t-h-r-e-e, 73.

Now 7 tens plus 1-2-3-4, gives us 7 tens 4 which is the number 74, s-e-v-e-n-t-y f-o-u-r, 74.
And 7 garlands plus 5 flowers it’s 7 tens 5 which form the number 75, s-e-v-e-n-t-y f-i-v-e.

On adding 1 more flower, now look Starry, we get 7 garlands plus 6 flowers that 7 tens 6 which is the number 76, s-e-v-e-n-t-y s-i-x, 76.

Now 7 garlands plus 7 flowers is 7 tens 7 that is 77, s-e-v-e-n-t-y s-e-v-e-n, 77.
Starry, here are 7 garlands plus 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 flowers that’s 7 tens 8, 78, s-e-v-e-n-t-y e-i-g-h-t, 78.

I know we're doing a lots of addition examples , but Starry doing addition is very useful in everyday life.


Ok I'll explain to you.
Lokio, This is the bill we got from the shop yesterday.
Let's read out the cost of items we purchase.
The cost of the water bottle is rupees 90.

We bought the six notebooks were rupees 60.
Now tell me Starry, what is written at the end of the bill?


Yes, it is written the total amount in rupees 150. So, what had we done?
Yes, the shopkeeper had added all the amount together to get the total.
So Starry, whenever we have to find the total quantity or number of items all together, we had to do addition.

Ok Starry, are you now ready to solve a few words problems.

Let's read the first problem.
Rozy's mother bought 15 chocolates and 50 toffees for her birthday.
How many sweets did she buy in all?

Starry, whenever you read a problem first write out what did given.
Can you tell me in the given problem what information is given?
Yes, it is given that Rozy's mother bought 15 chocolates and 50 toffees for her birthday.


The next step is to write what we have to find out.
Ohmm.....Here we have to find out the total number of sweets.

So Starry, which operation should be carry out?
Yes, we should do addition of 15 and 50 on adding digit.

We get 5 units and 0 units equal to 5 units. 1 ten and 5 tens equal to 6 tens.
So Starry, Rozy's mother bought 65 sweets for her birthday.

Ok Starry, let I show the next example.
A fruit seller has 65 mangoes, 36 bananas and 24 oranges in his cart.
How many fruits does he have in all? What did given here Starry?
Yes, it is given that A fruit seller has 65 mangoes, 36 bananas and 24 oranges.


What do we have to find? Yes, we have to find the total number of fruits.
So what should we do? We should add all the number of fruits.
Let's add 65 plus 36 plus 24 on adding digit.


In the unit line, we get 5 plus 6 plus 4 equal to 15 units, carry 1 ten to ten column.
Let's add the digit in the ten please.
6 plus 3 tens plus 2 tens plus 1 equal to 12 tens.. So Starry, the fruit seller has 125 fruits.

Here is the next example.
In the school, there were 42 children in standard 2A and 37 children in standard 2B.


Hence, find out the total number of children in both the classes.
So Starry, can you tell me what information is given here?
Yes, it is given 42 children in 2A and 37 children in 2B.
We have to find the total number of children in class 2.
Ok and let's add 42 and 37. 2 units plus 7 units is 9 units.
4 tens plus 3 tens is 7 tens. We got the answer 79.
So Starry, there were a total of 79 children in second standard in the school.

Hey Starry ! The next example is very easy. Come on !! Let's solve it.
Ruhi has 19 story books and her friends Tanya has 26 story books.
What is the total number of story books with them?


Yes Starry, the number of story books with Ruhi is 19 and the number of story book with Tanya is 26.
To find the total number of story books with them, we should add 19 and 26.
On adding, 9 units and 6 units we get 15 units.

Carry over 1 to ten please. Now, let's add 2 tens, 1 ten, 1 ten equal to 4 tens.
So the total number of story books with Ruhi and Tanya is 45.
Here is the last example. Let's read it first.

Karishma and her brother Sunil bought new clothes.
Karishma's dress cost rupees 575 and Sunil's shirt cost him rupees 210.
How much money did they spend in all? What's given?
The cost of Karishma's dress and the cost of Sunil's shirt.

What do we have to find? We have to find the total amount they have spent.
So Starry, can you do the addition? Yes, it's simple.

We have to arrange the 3 digit numbers in proper columns.
Now, start add the unit digit please. 5 units plus 0 unit equal to 5 units.
7 tens plus 1 ten equal to 8 tens.

And finally, 5 hundreds plus 2 hundreds equal to 7 hundreds.

So, Karishma and Sunil spent 785 rupees in all.

Another interesting feature of this board is that it is mathematic.
Come on, let us learn addition of two digit number using this board.

Let us now see how to add 25 and 6. Yes yes Starry, the method it the same.
Using the square of 20. First we put this magic coin on the number 25.
Now move the coin ahead six squares in the same and next column. 1 2 3 4 5 6.
Which is square do we read Starry? Yes, 31. So 25 plus 6 equal 31.


Do you understand Starry? Ok, then let’s solve the next example, 57 plus 9.
Here let’s put the coin on the number 57. How many square do we have to move ahead?
Yes, 9 squares. Here we have read the number 66.

So, we can say that 57 plus 9 equal 66.
This is a lot of fun!!! Ok, now let’s look another example.


It is 5 add to 81. Where we should put the coin Starry?
Yes, we start from the square 81, now let’s move the coin ahead. 1 2 3 4 5.
That’s 81 plus 5 equal to 86. I know what are you thinking Starry.
You aren’t worry. This square can be use for adding two digit number.
This will take along time. For example if we have to add 82 to 16.

Then you know what we have to do Starry?
Yes, we have to move the coin 82 square ahead of 16.
This will take along time. So let’s use another method to do addition.
16 plus 82. First we will arrange the numbers in vertical and solve.

Write 1 in the tens place and 6 in the units place.
Next, let’s place 8 below 1 in the tens place and 2 below 6 in the units place.

First we shall add the digit in the units column 6 plus 2 equal to 8.

Next we have to add the digit in the tens place, we get 1 plus 8 equals 9.
So Starry, 16 plus 82 equals to 98. It is a more fast the method Starry!

Ok, now let’s solve the next example. Add 23 and 61. What shall we do first Starry?
We shall first arrange the numbers in proper column.

In the number 23 write 2 in the tens column and 3 in the units column. What about 63 Starry?
Yes, we write 6 below 2 in the tens place and 1 below 3 in the units place.

Now let do addition! 3 unit plus 1 unit equals to 4 unit.
2 tens plus 6 tens equals to 8 tens. So, 23 plus 61 equals to 84.
Let’s solve the next example. 40 plus 12.
We shall first arrange the numbers vertically and solve.

Now Starry, carry out there addition.
